Journalist Charles Shaar Murray Remembers
Bob Marley At The Hammersmith Odeon, 1976:

“Trenchtown Rock’ filled the hall, occupying space and time like a solid object. Down front it was like dancing in the middle of a choir while simultaneously getting a full massage – plus you could watch the band with the I Threes dignifiedly swaying in the breeze and Marley moving fluid behind the centre mike, radiating the strange kind of intensity of presence that a small man can use to dominate a stage.”

“The band generated what seemed like infinite quantities of energy with virtually no apparent effort; a judoka’s mastery of stress and balance and pressure. Family Man Barrett’s bass was a huge granite Odin humming in the bath and the guitars did almost as much dancing as the audience.”

Today is the 147th anniversary of John Brown’s execution. In 1859, Brown led a raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, to start a liberation movement among the slaves there. During the raid, he seized the armory; seven people were killed, and ten or more were injured. He intended to arm slaves with weapons from the arsenal, but the attack failed. Within 36 hours, Brown’s men had fled or been killed or captured by local pro-slavery farmers, militiamen, and U.S. Marines led by Robert E. Lee. He was tried for treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia, the murder of five men and inciting a slave insurrection.

Born Lloyd George Robert in 1942, Ras Daniel Heartman was a prominent Jamaican artist and religious leader. He was a member of the Rastafari group called the Church Triumphant, and is considered one of the most recognized artists in the Rastafarian art movement. Some of his prints were among the Youth Pride, Inc. papers housed at Howard University’s Moorland-Spingarn Research Library, including “Chanting Brethren,” “Prince Emanuel”(1972), and “Daniel in the Lions Den,” the first of his prints sold as a reproduction by popular demand. The prints reflect the Rastafarian struggle for self-determination of their identity in Jamaica and abroad in the 1970s.
